I remember watching Amistad 🤢 there's things in this world I wish both had never happened and that I'd never seen or know about ..we watch programmes about murders who kill a family, or individual but slavery killed people in their thousands and horribly 😞💔

Amistad, Django are lightweight versions of how brutal slavery was. The Caribbean is known as the slaughterhouse. The island of Jamaica was that brutal a majority of female slaves didn’t hit puberty, due to the brutality they suffered. We haven’t even begun to scratch the surface on this

Remember seeing pictures like that at the museum in Hull. I was really young. But it still sticks. And that was the only point in my whole growing up that I was exposed to this bit of British history.

Great piece as ever!!! 👏 I was educated in secondary school till the late 90s. We learnt about the trade triangle, and we were taken to the Albert dock in Liverpool and had the trade explained further. Why this has changed since then is crazy.

This is a long deliberately hidden fact. It's astonishing to think this compensation was given and carried on till so recently. There are a few conscientious descendants who are handing money back, but they are the few.

It’s one of the things I loathe about the Drax family. Massive compensation. Still “supplying” MPs (last one, Richard Drax, of course a Tory - surprise!) and STILL OWN their slave plantation land on Barbados. Wtf?! Why hasn’t Barbados kicked him out or is their government being held to ransom too?

Over their lost "investment." Plus, I hate to break it to you Britain benefited from Slavery long after 1833.

Check out the Wilberforce Museum in Hull (UK). Every school kid in Hull gets to go. William Wilberforce worked to get slavery outlawed in the UK. His old house is now dedicated to slavery, and why he got it outlawed.

FWIW I'm all for reparations, but have not heard a workable algorithm for that yet.
The one thing you don't do is tear down the monuments, that's Stalinist.
Where you find a statue of Colston, or Cass, you put up a statue within sight, that tells the other side of the story.

Not entirely true - but regardless how does that change the history he's talking about in this post? Does it mean we should forget the atrocities? Eventually we did the 'right' thing - by paying compensation to the slave owners NOT the slaves! A debt finally paid off in 2015 by Uk tax payers.

The slavery museum in Liverpool does a good job of telling the story as it was. Still many wealthy families living in the area who made their money from this horrific and inhumane practice. I still can't comprehend why their lands, properties and money wasn't confiscated.

I learned that in a college class, that England likes to ignore that they took part in the slave trade. They did stop the practice well before us Americans did. I’ve even heard some British don’t know about the Boston Tea Party or the American Revolution.
