This was the Jordan dynasty Bulls of the Video Game eraβjust a completely unassailable force that everyone just eventually waited out until the next generation of consoles came along because they utterly dominated that one until they were retired.
Omg π± this reminds me that my mother didnβt think I required a memory card in my PS/PS2 and so if the power went out it was simply game over and a restartβ¦.
Yeah they got a little too big for their britches. Released too many high-quality games too quickly and then that CG movie ended up being a huge flop and nearly ruined their planned merger with Enix.
It was definitely made to cash in on Resident Evil but it had a flair all its own. More of an action-RPG with a horror backdrop than a survival horror.
Then 2 bizarrely went in the completely opposite direction; it was a survival horror with a few RPG elements blended in...
Great times! I remember being at my friends house and him and his brother and me would take turns playing for a while and the others that wasnβt playing would watch.
Side note, what are your thoughts on the rumors of them remastering/remaking FF9?
It's hard, but great. The plot is one of those great Moon colonists vs Earth science fiction stories. The techno soundtrack is also one of the best of the era.
Also, Hardcore Gaming has a really good article on Parasite Eve and its connections with FF7, if you haven't read it yet. Aya Brea is basically the female Cloud.
Enix's Dragon Quest series rivaled if not beat the FF games in Japan. But, they also made Actraiser 1&2, Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and the Ogre Battle games among some others. Of course we got robbed of the 16-bit Dragon Quest games in the west.
I think it's unfair that the original tactics has been re-released, but its two sequels are still trapped on their old systems. Give us Advance and A2 remasters!
Can I mirco-rant? Final Fantasy Tactics was my first tactics game and I still think it's the best, it used a lot of vertical and layered level design, bridges, spires, terraces, it was great! The next tactics I played was Disgaea, and the whole game just felt so flat by comparison.

What a time, what a system to be an RPG fan π©π€
I found out recently that my mother used to fake power failures to make me go to bed.
Flipping the circuit breaker.
I don't have a lot of memories of that but oh man imagine if I was on 199 of 200 lighting bolts!!!
This happened a lot to me as a kid
Saw that and immediately said "I have to play this fucking game"
Then 2 bizarrely went in the completely opposite direction; it was a survival horror with a few RPG elements blended in...
βYeah, I knowβ
You could throw in final fantasy's 4, 5, 6 and 10 into the above listed games and still not lose the argument.
Square was cooking with gas on games 4 - 10
Side note, what are your thoughts on the rumors of them remastering/remaking FF9?
Those games changed game development for ever
4 very different games
All ff
I spent HOURS chocobo racing just to get Knights of the Round. And the doing it again because I could.
If you have a PS3, PSP, or Vita it's also on PSN for $9.99.
Zidane and Garnet are probably some of favorite FF characters.
