Won't get to the Orange Tree, sadly, but we loved the RSC 12th Night. So funny, but genuinely moving too. Michael Grady-Hall and Sam West stand-outs in an excellent cast. Probably the most musical 12th N I've seen, and the organ was amazing.

I liked Gweneth Keyworth's stalwart Viola, not trying to be gamine or particularly boyish, strong affection for Olivia & having a proper go at Orsino when he held forth about men & love🙄 (Bally Gill your Romeo will always have my heart but your Orsino in full naval dress uniform was fine too.)2/7

Olivia (Freema Agyeman) wasn't WET, she knew she was in a mess, gave great side-eye, & had a very excellent frock. (Also wedding dress and going-away outfit. Props to wardrobe for the bridal number in particular - on stage for a matter of minutes. Also killer nails.) Des. James Cotterill. 3/7

Sam West's Malvolio so complex: insecure, slipping accent, immaculate, overly formal clothes in a household where standards were slipping. Nastiness; real fear & pathos in the dark house. Heartbreak as he tore up the letter in the last scene & then still gathered up the fragments. What an actor 4/7

Much comedy in the organ pipes and organ/organist-related humour in general. (I particularly enjoyed Orsino's brilliant lover's gift of a very small gift-wrapped harmonium.) (Demetri Goritsas as Andrew, Joplin Sibtain as Toby, Daniel Millar as Fabian; Danielle Henry as Maria) 5/7

I liked that both Orsino and Olivia had quirky, slightly chaotic households; it added to the potential for comedy (and music and dancing) and helped to fill that enormous stage. The music (Matt Maltese) was beautiful 6/7

Would recommend Prasanna Puwanarajah's RSC prod. for all ages; lovely to be part of a matinee crowd with lots of family groups having a good time. And (spooky) as I arrived a busker with a keyboard outside was playing Jesu Joy. Was this viral marketing @orangetreetheatre.bsky.social ? 7/7
