About 20 years ago Deftones had their albums available to stream for free directly on their own site. I thought that was the coolest thing since no other big artists really did that. There's no need for it now thanks to DSPs, but I'm not sure if anyone else remembers them doing that. - ThreadSky

im too young to have experienced it but ive heard of other artists doing this type of things in the 2000s, like nine inch nails releasing two albums under a creative commons license. too bad that stuff like this isnt possible now that streaming is the norm

Shout-out to BONES for holding it down for so long. For the longest time none of his music was on streaming services, and every single project he'd just release as a zip file you could download.

Unsure if he still has downloads, but he's finally on stream and getting paid.

That was In Rainbows I believe and I paid for it. Use to go to Best Buy on Friday and buy 9.99 CDs, so I paid 9.99 and felt like part of the future.

That was it! Back when Hastings was a thing (RIP) I'd go there for my new music, it was usually $1-2 cheaper on release and they'd have the artist's backlog on sale!

It was usually Hastings, Target, then Best Buy in that order for my new CD release priority.

It just is their best album, and after it the band was more or less gone. They came back years later, when they all of a sudden were deemed classic and became heroes of a new generation.

Not wrong about them fighting to stay relevant during that time, although to me I thought Diamond Eyes was phenomenal, it was just as good as White Pony to me.

Maybe, but the problem is that their singer had fucked up his voice good at that point in their career, and he never remotely got back to the form he was in the White Poiny era.

Yet they still made a phenomenal album about 10 years later and they're touring right now! He seems to be working well within his limits.
