As a college student in 1940, Pauli Murray was jailed for not giving up her bus seat. As an attorney, Murray articulated the arguments that ultimately overturned Jim Crow in the Supreme Court in 1954 & Jane Crow in 1971 when courts agreed that the equal protection clause applies to women.
