Nickel Boys was something other than “a movie.” I don’t think the Academy knew what to do with it. Shocked it didn’t get a nomination for director or editor. It was something completely new.

Agreed... it was extraordinary. The use of perspective + still photos and graphic interludes + the twist were probably too much to parse as a narrative film.
