Plants are constantly challenged by the environment, but they cannot move to escape from these conditions. However, plants have a striking resilience to stress that allows them to live long. Thus, plants can be a model to define protective mechanisms against protein aggregation.

We challenged the #proteostasis of plants by expressing the toxic fragment of human huntingtin, which causes #HuntingtonDisease in humans. We find that plants can prevent aggregation and toxicity of huntingtin through their chloroplasts.

Indeed, chloroplasts expand the repertoire of #proteostasis components suppressing pathological protein aggregation. We found that chloroplast proteins such as SPP can be applied in human cells and C. elegans models to prevent disease-related changes.
