I used to date a recovering alcoholic who worked as an alcohol counselor at an in-patient rehab.
He told me the biggest problem families had when their loved ones completed the progam was realizing it wasn't the alcohol, their loved one was just an asshole.

I mean, yes and no. I was certainly an asshole when I was drinking. I was hurting myself and everyone around me. That’s why I stopped! It didn’t make me, like, racist or anything like that, though.

This! Addiction and/or recreational drug use doesn't change who people are, even if it reduces inhibitions and facilitates people unleashing the parts of themselves they deny or repress more easily when sober. There are plenty of gentle, kind addicts who use drugs to try to avoid sadness and trauma.

I did show up to work drunk many times. Never to the point of passing out, but that was probably just luck tbh. And if someone asked me under oath about my drinking, specifically, I would have lied about that, but not about anything else. The rest, though, is just about lowering inhibitions.

If that’s what comes out when your inhibitions are lowered, that’s still on you. Personally, I said the f- word once when I was drunk. Strangely enough, I never assaulted anyone (sexually or otherwise) or yelled hate speech, cause those aren’t things I wanted to do.
