Keep it short! Proposals need to be limited to *5 survey items* and are even more likely to succeed if they include fewer itmes. This does not mean 5 different sub-scales! It really means 5 questions at the most! 2/

Make it scientifically justified! Within 5 pages, make it clear why these will add scientific value to the GSS in particular. Why the GSS as opposed to another survey or a one off survey? Must also be justified scientifically, theoretically, or methodologically. Also consider statistical power! 3/

Be creative! Think about using subsamples in the GSS, for example. Think about question wording experiments. These could address scientific or survey methods questions 4/

Don't forget the point of GSS! The GSS tracks social change over the time in the US. It's also a public good! You want to be sure a large community of general users could benefit from your proposed item(s). 5/
