Super common in the foreign policy field, where domain experts still believe visual communication is not a research or data-driven process, but a leg in a waterfall workflow where we're just the "copy shop". The PDF is more than a dated format, it drives the methodology.

Absolutely. Unfortunately, this also means that data visualization folks get called in far too late in the process. I don't dispute that visualization is useful for communication. However, I wish that people would also realize we can help in the analysis as well...

We've been pivoting @crisisgroup.org to call ourselves visual researchers rather than "producers". Our work has helped inform the research process, not just produce external-facing products...

Coming from the other side of the equation (the practitioner among researchers):

Having a student help translate the norms massively helped.

Differences in language - motivate being one example. Where we hedge and are direct differs (feedback).

The level of defense for an idea needed also vastly differs. In many cases, I don't need a lot of arguments because people hire me for my expertise. Articulating "why" often involves examples.
