Running an organizing training and no one in the group knew what “above the fold” means because they don’t read physical newspapers. I am Methuselah, I’m Father Abraham, I am old as dust.

They don’t know what anything means anymore. If it’s not an Acronym, or an app or some computer format that just rolled out. Maybe you can get a spot in the Smithsonian museum along with all us other old folk.
The wife and I got in huge argument, since the elected Dems are just begging for money instead of doing something physical, I think she’s right, f the Democrats and run, if they don’t give an F, I probably should just f’ing run away too. F$&@ing elected Dems just sitting around collecting money.
Newspapers are folded in half for display at newsstands and in vending boxes, so layout editors put the important, attention-grabbing stuff "above the fold"
That’s about how I felt when my granddaughter turned 2 and she was so excited about the present I gave her wrapped in large polka dot paper. She excitedly started pushing all the dots then looked at me and said, “Bwoken, gwandma, Bwoke.” Yep, old as dirt.
Those people are missing out. Reading an old school newspaper is a treat. Especially if it has comics in it, and you have some fresh silly putty on hand. Oooh doggie 🐶, those were some fun times in childhood. I still enjoy a paper newspaper, a cappuccino, and a pen, for when I get to the crossword!🥰
True. I was thinking it was akin to “cut and paste.” We don’t use an X-acto knife and wax anymore, but everyone understands the term “cut and paste.” I suppose that’s more intuitive, though, than “above the fold.”
Maybe so. But even more than anything else, you bring a wealth of knowledge to a generation of humans who never had the privilege of sneaking downstairs before anyone else to skim the paper while eating cereal before school.
The Pale was the area in eastern Ireland that the English controlled in the Middle Ages. The area outside it was “Beyond the Pale” where the “lawless” Irish remained, & it was completely unsafe for the English. Now it’s a phrase used to describe something that’s crazy.
I recently went back to college. While writing notes on the whiteboard, my entire class informed me I would need to print. Not a single student could read cursive.
After that they called me "The Elder who reads scrolls." 😭
I was required to use Cursive through 5th grade for all work, then permitted to print starting at 6th grade. Most of my classmates never wrote in cursive ever again. But I can read it.
You can still buy a real newspaper, and get it delivered! I notice I read a much wider variety of articles in the real paper than I do online, where things are siloed into categories, so I miss coming across something interesting which I wasn't looking for. Kind of like the card catalog!
My husband picked up Baltimore Sun & WP on his way home. We’d have a drink and and read in silence. We’d discuss while he cooked dinner. It was something to look forward to: end of work day! I miss real newspapers!
Steve Jobs announced the iPhone on 9th January 2007. There are adults right now who are younger than the iPhone, and who have never known a world without it.
Excuse me while I turn into dust and drift away on the wind.
I miss the absolute joy of screening calls through the answering machine. Such a delish feeling smirking and walking away while your mom/ex/irritation screams "I know you're listening!!"
We have an answering machine on the landline. Most calls are hangups, probably from robodialers. Most of the time when the landline is in use, some other machine calls our machine and they decide not to talk to each other.
The advantage of the answering machine was that it didn't leave the house, so they never really knew if you were ignoring them or busy. This was so frustrating to the boomer gen, I thought my mom's head would explode, lol. It was the first time you had power over your phone life.
I told someone earlier this week that we didn't have an answering machine until I was 12. I also remember getting our first computer and first microwave
We need educate them by supporting MORE local print/digital newspapers to insure the news is not the hostage of the media bowing to Trump. @nfbenton.bsky.social

Even though there is a generation that has known nothing but iPhones and even though almost everyone has one - when someone pantomimes "call me" they still imitate holding the old fashioned receiver while mouthing the words.
When I was much younger, I used the phrase “smiles everyone, smiles” only to find out my listener was too young to have seen Fantasy Island. Now I am much older and still as surprised when my 1970’s and 80’s references fall flat 🫣
I get that it is still used but it has been proven irrelevant again and again. There is no fold. And even among devices the variance in screen sizes alone makes it useless. Basic IA is all that's needed.
actually Above the Fold is still used to indicate the first screen presented in HTML/CSS/JavaScript. Sorry to disagree. Numskulls just don't know stuff in general

Maybe roll your car window down
Or borrow a dime so you can call someone who cares
Or tell me I’m close, but no cigar
One kid literally asked what was the handle for (car window) 🤯

Course, I’m probably as old as you.
How are we still alive?
