Digimon Adventure, with its themes about the connections between "real life" and the "digital world" was especially prescient in the late '90s/early '00s. It was the first generation of kids that were actively using the internet to make friends and form relationships.

Of course, the end of Adventure is a bittersweet one. The kids grow up and have to leave the "summer camp" sensation of paling around with their monsters. That's a very important detail, even if there would be sequels. It's beautiful and sad and inevitable.

And even if Our War Game provides a pseudo "they're getting the band sort of back together" moment to reaffirm their bonds and save the world again, that's not the most crucial bit of Our War Game. Instead, it's the children watching the battle. The ones in the midst of their own lives and changes.

"Our" War Game pulls the rest of the world into frame and makes everyone a "Digi-destined/chosen child" of sorts. Because they to have the capacity to create an impact, to form connections in ways they never thought possible, to make a difference.

As adults, we know it's not so simple or idealistic. We often look on the internet and how people deal with strangers or any sort of problem and see a wasteland.

But Our War Game is an optimistic rallying cry for the kids watching. It doesn't have to be bad! And you can help!

Anyway, I believe Our War Game (along with the original Adventure short) is among Hosoda's best work. It turns every kid into the special youths that they saw in the anime, only now they're not special because they were ordained by destiny, but just because they chose to help.

Yeah I’ve watched both. Some of the music choices in the dub are definitely a thing and they cut a lot. The third bit suffers most of all. There’s actually some bits of the pilot movie I prefer in the dub. Like “I’m greymon now” and the theme playing is iconic.
