I agree Matt when Smithfield Road closed it is going to be vital for the NW RR just to keep traffic moving. I am concerned about emergency vehicles as with closure of A&E at Telford there will be greater need to keep traffic flowing around Shrewsbury. - ThreadSky

But that assumes there is only one air ambulance in use at once. I ask you to sit at the side of Smithfield road just one day and watch ambulances blue lighting and just count them. It would be annoying if the air ambulance was in use just as a loved one needed to get to A&E.

I would like a dual-carriageway from my house direct to the hospital but there isn’t one because it’s not cost effective and the environmental destruction/biodiversity loss would be vast The same applies to the BC for NWRR. Anyway it won’t get built, so look at the alternatives

Very real concern is whoever gets in in May, if there's no money to build the NWR we still need solutions to congestion in the town. Years ago they used to clear houses/businesses for roads (see Frankwell/Barker St), thankfully we know better now.

There either needs to be a bypass and shut off the town centre to though traffic, keep the set up as it is, or an alternative could be another road bridge to link bus station end of Smithfield Rd across to Frankwell. This would free up Smithfield for more social use.

I just can't see it happening in the near future. Meanwhile more and more homes being built with limited options for anything but car dependency. Something needs to change whatever they do. Hopefully it's the correct one for the long term future of Shrewsbury, not just a sticking plaster.

Those timings are different at 7.30 in the morning. The quickest way for me to work is Telford Way, however we car share, so drive Smithfield Rd. For those going the other way the Roman Rd is a huge tailback every morning and evening. Dobbies needs to be a flyover.

Sure but that's mostly people driving into Shrewsbury. The NWRL would have very limited impact or even make things worse when the traffic it generates is funnelled into the town centre.

Whilst walking and cycling is the ideal it just doesn't quite work for Shrewsbury. My late Mum was disabled liked to do her shopping and banking in town but really struggled as her mobility decreased. I still believe that there is hope it just needs a rethink.

Interestingly my disabled parents moved away from Shrewsbury partly because they felt the increases in vehicle traffic in the town was not making it an easy or safe place to shop.

I no longer live and work in Shrewsbury but on occasions I have traversed town it's been a nightmare. We can't move the river but do need a way to deal with traffic using A49 A5 etc. I blame the Highways Agency who built the road for not completing the job years ago!

I understand the frustrations. I still drive some journeys to the top of town from near the hospital, but I tend to drive round the bypass. I would probably cycle more of them (esp with my little one) if the roads were a bit safer. 20mph limits would help massively with this.

If we lived in Town we would definitely cycle. However we would be looking at an hour each way along unsafe country roads.

I totally agree about the unsafe country lanes. I personally would not cycle them. Its a shame that there cannot be separate cycle paths like there is between Pontesbury and Minsterley for at least a 10 mile radius of the town, and speed reductions on smaller country lanes in general.

Yep, I've suggested before a route from the car park for Battlefield to Plex would open up countryside and provide a route for cyclists coming into town. Alternatively a cycle route along Ellesmere Rd from Albrighton in as far as Herongate (linking up with the Maltings) quite easily.

The cycle path needs extending to Hanwood as a first step, but impossible to get to Shrewsbury without a bridge/tunnel. A council with a vision beyond 20th C road solutions is required

When we lived in Castlefields the walk was brilliant. When we moved further out I cycled everywhere however traffic puts me off the thought of cycling into town now. Mum just had to use transport to get in. Eventually she moved to banking at Harlescott and shopping online.

I think this sums it up for a lot of people. Myself included. We just don't feel safe enough to cycle relatively short distances. Maybe that is where money should be going, into making these routes safer.

Underdale into Castlefields is quite a good route, but hasn't been maintained very well and isn't easy to cycle well now.

Drivers just don't care. I used to cycle from Wellington past the Beet factory to Upton Magna with primary school son then onto Shirehall. From Atcham across Emstrey Island was scary and I am a brave but careful cyclist.
