basically, one of the most famous studies on scientific fraud does not have an open dataset, there is no preregistration, from what i saw no ethical approval.

these are important discussions if we want to understand to what extent the scientific literature is fraudulent, since we cannot know the true extent of the problem without knowing about both positive and negative results.

Theoretical physics PhD graduate here. Arguing the falsifiability of theories of physics is healthy. General relativity has the same thing (predictions of gravitational waves were only recently confirmed 100 years or so after they were predicted). String theory is MUCH more complicated than GR

It's interesting to look at the records of the protagonists. Briane Greene has published books and papers (he has nearly 100 on the arXiv). Peter Woit's contributiuons to ANY field of physics are almost non-existent (7 papers on the arXiv, all single author, maybe 2 are proper research papers).

My take is that Woit is acting like his partner cheated on him with a string theorist. He has an entertaining but ultimately unproductive axe to grind. Full disclosure: My PhD was tangential to string theory, about AdS/CFT and calculating things about the field theory side of that correspondence.
