This song and the Clash in general literally changed my life from the first album (almost all the way to the last-if you’re a fan you’ll know what I mean here). My approach to life and to politics was to a degree largely formed by Strummer & company’s music, lyrics & interview statements.

I was given a Rock against Racism badge at school in 1978. A year later, I saw The Clash play at the concerts for the people of Kampuchea. I'm still a Clash fan, still anti racist. I have lived in Cambodia for ten years

Stalin in Knickers sounds like it should be a song. Don’t mean to laugh about what sounds like was a crummy thing. I know someone who teaches English in Vietnam and they love it there. Been feeling a bit edgy and itching to leave the states to tell you the honest truth.

Their musical development over the 5-year period was astonishing. I love all the stages of it but I remember how a good friend of mine was so disappointed when this album came out. Clash has become a jazz(!) band! I think he changed his mind later 😀

Matter of taste, really. I hate that Cadillac song that comes next. 'Rudie can't fail' has the melody of a toddler's song, and so on. This was their first mid tempo pop album, trying to make it big, like many bands at that time. And they did. But most of the punks I knew didn't like it that much.

To add some perspective to that, I have nothing against pop. For example Stiff Little Fingers did the same thing, but they had really well written pop songs. Their "Go For It" and "Now Then" albums are full of mid tempo songs that still have that punk energy.
