i have found when we enter into punk/not punk discussions (i'll avoid the term 'argument') that there is usually a difference in how people are defining the term. for me, punk is an attitude more than a musical style.

I sort of think of it like Jazz. Dixieland isn't Big Band isn't Bop isn't whatever Kenny G is. But there is a unifying Jazzness that runs through it and keeps it all connected. Trying to define it with too much granularity is nonsense, and smothers the spirit that birthed it in the first place.

i'd posit that Jerry Lee Lewis was a punk at heart, though his music wasn't. i agree that early Joy Division are a part of punk history, even if it could be said they were more the tip of the post-punk spear.

ultimately the definition is more subjective than we might at first think.

I'd add Dylan when he went electric. Punk is very much like folk music , but plugged in and loud. Punk also gave us hardcore, thrash, and was where beastie boys and U2 started... a lot of creative energy came from punk!

At the beginning punk bands used to play very different music "styles".
Artists, Musicians, kids from the audience we shared the same sickness about society, and what ruled the world.
We were annoyed, and frustrated for what we were supposed to be in it.

Yes, Joy Division isn't punk but I still believe they should be covered here. I think music that led up to punk (proto specifically) as well as what came after is just as important. At least to me anyway.

Narrowing down the definition of punk rock as an exercise in purity or misguided fealty to a particular sound is kinda the antithesis of punk rock. Arguing about it loudly with your friends using filthy insults most definitely is in keeping with the spirit, however. 😁
