They weren’t stolen. American companies moved their production overseas, along with their bank accounts, to avoid tax, labor and environmental laws, fair wages and to increase their profits.

It would be interesting to look at more specific data, time period etc. and your sources. My recollection, post China's entry into the WTO, was swarms of venture capitalists literally shipping factories overseas, and even forcing US workers to train their foreign replacements.

NAFTA was signed in the 1990s & it’s blamed for taking manufacturing jobs out of the United States by a lot of people, but it only included the United States, Mexico, & Canada. The nineties saw a lot of factories become automated.

My failing memory, before joining WTO, in the late 70s, early '80s, China set out to become the factory floor of the world. An effort hugely helped by Wall Street. Cheap labor took manufacturing jobs long before automation.
