This whole concept confuses me. Like of course, if I seen the object before I'm going to know how to visualize it. But at the same time if I'm asked to visualize something I've already seen before, I at times have a hard time visualizing it. And just close my eyes.

How does programming work for you? I feel like it's got a spatial/visual component for me, like not just in terms of remembering where things are in a code base, but interpreting a block of code and thinking about what it does to data feels like mentally manipulating objects somehow.

If I’m working in OOP then I can visualize the objects as like bricks connected by methods

I visualize data as literal JSON, I can open a little vim in my head and see the schema for any object, programming-related or not. I can visualize the apple and turn it in my head, & sense the apple’s “data”

The data isn’t really clear in my head because I don’t have a photographic memory so I struggle to get the data to “stay still” so I can see it. But I can certainly sense it in some kind of visualized way. I don’t spend a lot of time visualizing code in my head because it’s already an abstraction.

Instead, I’m more likely to visualize the greater sum of what the code will be. Instead of thinking of it like a schematic, I think of it like an organic entity

I don't exactly know how this works for me, but I also think there's a visual component to it.

And not just for OO code, for techniques like Data Oriented Design too.

I find it very hard to explain my exact thought process in an interview because it's not exactly clear to me

People also don't seem to talk about it much too, i think? i've never been very networked online with tech stuff, so I may miss it. I've noticed it a bit more with learning functional programming because I think it pushes me out of the comfort zone and thus forces me to visualize more.

In a similar vein, I can taste something if someone describes the flavors or ingredients. Or if I start reciting parts of a recipe or a dish, I can slowly feel the flavors build on my tongue. I can actually cook something in my head and know what it’ll taste like before even try to cook it.

Probably somewhere between a 2 and 3 for me, possibly in the 2 to 4 range depending on the day.

It's not that there's no colour at all, but when I picture something it's definitely not a fully realized object, it's more like the gist of it.

Which is odd, considering that my brain is clearly capable of doing so. I've occasionally had vivid dreams where things looked as realistic and detailed as real life (though my normal dreams don't)

It’s interesting to me that someone could visualize it but lack the color. I’d have to try really hard to drain all the color out of a mental visualization. That said, I don’t have a strong color sense or intuition so it doesn’t translate well into art coloring lol

same. i regularly sit somewhere between 1 & 2 depending on several factors and am able to manipulate the visualizations, sounds, tastes, textures, etc. dreams (sleeping/waking) can be VERY convincing which can be a good or bad depending.
