I literally had no clue cricket was segregated by sex and after looking up gameplay and watching a video of professionals... I have no clue why cricket is segregated by sex.

It's not segregated because of ability. Women weren't allowed to play for a long time so the women's game was created to bring women into the sport and give them their own space to develop. In time, once generations of girls get the same opportunity as boys, we won't need it.

"Generations?" It's cricket. You block a ball with a paddle and jog back and forth. There were girls on my high school football and wrestling teams almost 30 years ago. Was it to "bring them into the sport" or keep them from competing against boys and maybe even surpassing them?

Most male pros have come through private boy's schools with millions invested in training facilities and more than 100 years experience. Real money has existed in the women's game less than a decade. But below pro women can play on men's teams already, but women's teams still exist for their comfort

I suspect most of these journos & politicans are private elite schools educated & thus are not used to or aware that us unwashed masses often have to use mixed facilities because the lack of available infrastructure & are thus used to know they are not as dangerous as they propagate them to be.

Although women's cricket was probably even more exclusionary than men's, class-wise, it's inaccurate to say "women weren't allowed to play for a long time". The first recorded cricket match between women was reported in The Reading Mercury on 26 July 1745.

By the 19th C there were dozens of women's clubs in England, Australia, even India - and the first women's test match was in 1934. It was probably taken more seriously in Australia than in England, where prevailing classism kept it more elitist.

Also accurate to say it was both elitist & primarily rich women that played for certainly the first 200-odd years of women's cricket, making it inaccessible to many. Also obviously very accurate to say it wasn't given equal public attention until the last decade.

I wasn't aware women's cricket had such a long history, my apologies. But you're right, it doesn't seem to have been taken seriously until the 1970s and obviously there's still huge funding gaps today. And it only went professional in England in 2015.

I remember a great article from Sky Sports on trans inclusivity in cricket where they spoke to a trans girl who had come out and transitioned whilst continuing to play with the same boys team. Because below professional the ECB allows trans people to play wherever they're most comfortable.

It's about making female players more comfortable. And at the top it's also about development as there's historically a lot less money invested in training women. Below pro I believe women can play on men's teams if they want.

Ultimately, it's no longer about women being less than men.

I see they forget that cis women are eligible, and do play in men’s teams.
The local cricket club I attend, has a regular woman in the men’s first team.
She takes wickets and scores runs.
Who’d have thought it?
