I think for the whole of the UK it has spiked at about 300. For a long term persecuted part of society that will tend to push people into crime, this low number shows just how safe a demographic we are. Far different to the monsters the media constantly try to make us out to be.

That’s the number of prisoners who identify as trans inside. But the majority of them never transitioned before prison, committed their crimes in male mode, and continue to live in male mode once released.

There are complicated things going on here, but for the most part it looks like …

… cross-dressers on long spells inside declare themselves to be trans so they get access to clothing and makeup (and also LGBT wings with actual trans women to harass). Whereas if they just call themselves cross-dressers, they don’t.

The spectrum between cross-dressing and being trans is a very vague one: I’ve known trans folks who used to say they were CDs, as well as CDs who tried transitioning and then stopped. The phenomenon of “trans inside”, “male again outside” is however a real one.

At my most charitable, I’d argue a long spell in prison erases the private / public boundaries, so it is no longer possible to be a CD or trans person in private, while hiding it in public. So some who’ve never come out before do so inside. But then go back in the closet again post release.

I would argue that many of those who transition inside do so because their past life is over (offence depending) and until they’re no longer in prison we can’t presume they’ll revert back because…
