You can't unlock the gym without Ryuji's confidant, so Akira exclusively works out in the attic. I can only imagine it like:

Mona: Why don't you just go to the gym?
Akira: No, that's awkward; Ryuji might be there
Mona: ???? Aren't you teammates???
Akira: It's complicated
