What's fucked is how pretty much all of them were treated as heroes when they came back. Lloyd Fredendall was amongst the worst. And then there was Edward Almond, a southern racist who was placed in charge of african american troops and always blamed his own men for his crappy tactics.

I need to check that book out. My History teacher in high school used Fredendall's incompetence as a lesson to describe how Blitzkreig/Combined arms works: Rommel massed his armor, covered by infantry, while Fredendall distributed his armor piecemeal amongst the infantry, unable to cover each other.

Atkinson did a three-part series on the war; his second book is on the Italian campaign, which is another theater that doesn't get much coverage. He draws a lot from Bill Mauldin's works, which is as it should be. Spielberg should make another "Band Of Brothers" based on Mauldin's Italy stuff

It's neat because my Grandfather mostly fought in the Italian Campaign with the 36th ID. He had stories: He was at Anzio, Bari, Monte Cassino, and saw the Marocchinate first hand, which deeply disturbed him. He also fought alongside the French resistance at Montelimar, where he bayonetted a Nazi.

Honestly thinking the only reason we won was cause it was near the end of the war, Japan pissed us off via Pearl Harbor, the Axis were already weakened…yeah, the nukes at that point were just to be an asshole if you learned they were already surrendering at that point.
