I’ve been saying this too. Our public health messaging is woeful. I’m still masking inside (aside from my home) and I’ve never had Covid. 4/5 members of my household mask and the same 4/5 have never had Covid.

This effect is even worse in high-trust Scandinavia. The gov’t only wants what is best and would never lie.

I haven’t seen another mask in 2.5 years. Masking wouldn’t even enter their heads.

It’s not just a failure of communication here in BC but an active attitude that “we” aren’t a society that wears masks. Apparently “we” are a society that prefers to leave our precious kids with lifelong health issues and to get rid of enough of those pesky elderly/people with pre-existing issues.

I mask zealously—it’s miserable and kills the fun. Short-term COVID risks are low now, and long COVID is likely overstated. But I’m worried about subtle, long-term effects on the brain and organs. Waiting for more studies (Douaud et al update would be good), but that’s why I still mask.
