Canada’s legacy news media wanted a rage-baiting petulant pipsqueak to become the next Prime Minister. Thankfully, most Canadians voted against that idea. Corporate news media is hopelessly biased.

c'mon, if not technically, literally, legally LOO, pp obviously continues to be the leader of the opposition, as leader of the cpc, by far the largest opposition party.
In Québec, the most read & watched French speaking media (Quebecor, owned by PKP ex-PQ leader) was backing Bloc. Didn't work much, since word of mouth carried the opposite message: vote Lib. Not brainwashed.
Sadly, in Canada, the majority of the news media is American owned, right-leaning & suspect. Too many Canadians also watch extremely biased US news media such as Fox, Newsmax, etc. Seems that, until we figure out a way to support & grow Canadian owned news, we are going to have disinfo/bias issues.
National Observer, The Conversation Canada, Dougald Lamont , Evan Scrimshaw, David Moscrop, The Tyee, The Bridge with Peter Mansbridge ( Good Talk), The Breach,
Related: The over representation of male voices in political media/journalism is a big problem that needs to be addressed, given they often (mis) define narratives in ways that impact political outcomes.
DItto for me. In fact, since Jan, I've deliberately sought out her factual, no-nonsense commentary. I also relied on her list of election night 'look fors',all
based on factual analysis. Of course, she was spot on.
Get your news on Substack. Many awesome independent journalists there including The Meidas Touch and also Jim Acosta. Also the best coverage of judicial matters with The Contrarian.
They kept arguing that Canadians wanted change when it was media who wanted change to boost their ratings. Notice they aren’t calling for change of long-serving leaders in Ontario or Saskatchewan.
"Most" voted against that idea, yes, but it was waaaaay too close, only 500k votes difference. The fact that so many voted for cons is extremely troubling for the future of our country.
Only 20 million of us even bothered to vote. IMO, given how assiduously the gov't protects & facilitates our voting rights, there is absolutely No excuse for 50% of the population to ignore their resposibility.
I was under that assumption too but those people are long gone. The board serves for a 5 year term and some are currently serving their second term but the earliest I can find anyone of them first appointed was after Harper was defeated.
The CBC, in the past 3 elections spend a great amount of their time pointing out every wart and blemish of, in this case the Liberals. Their word choice is antagonistic, they show "gotcha clips" of missteps and at best ignore all faux pas or warts on, in these cases the Cons.
Another theory, still under investigation. Legacy media want the spotlight on them: bylines, stories above the fold; feature tv news item, leading the broadcast. Annual prizes at celebrations of journalism. Truth, accuracy, detail way down the list; almost after a thought. Fading fast.
Even the CBC is a watered down version of what it once was. There needs to be some HUGE FUCKING CHANGES in this country moving forward; American influence OUT and Religious Fundamentalism OUT of our media and politics.
We have been WAY too lenient with Right Wing Christo-Fascists. ENOUGH.
When I moved to Canada from the US to study at McGill, I was completely blown away by CBC and how they didn't dumb things down or try to manipulate Canadians the way the American media does. I considered it a bastion against the misinformation being spread by the American media.
This MUST happen and well before the next election. Foreign owners must be forced to sell, and no single Canadian entity should be allowed to dominate news to the degree Postmedia does either.
That blade cuts both ways. Seemed reasonable when the debates were about taxation rates and such, but enforcing equal time for some of the current MAGA topics may not be helpful. They're arguing well established base science at this point.
Agreed, but facts are uncontestable. They are facts. Opinions do not alter or negate facts.
What such a law guarantees is that media is required to report in a balanced manner. "Opinion as fact" diatribes cease to work as they are offset immediately by a counterpoint. Debates become about facts
Legacy news media pales in comparison to social media. Facebook is the biggest culprit in the destruction of our political discourse. It pushes people to consume content they never asked for, and most people don't know how to control their own feeds. An addiction people can't stop.
Don't forget their smaller\non-national outlets. Here in NB, Post Media also owns those below. I imagine other provinces are similar.
Telegraph-Journal
The Daily Gleaner
Bugle-Observer
Info Weekend
Kings County Record
Miramichi Leader
L'Étoile
The Northern Light
The Tribune

Eliminate foreign ownership of Canadian press!
BUT replacing
right-wing corporate American ownership with
right-wing corporate Canadian ownership won’t be helpful.

They love the division so they can exploit ratings.
Carney should force the re patriation of our media back to Canadian ownership
based on factual analysis. Of course, she was spot on.
We need media to call out all misinformation - regardless of source.
Though 47 and batshit marlena will more than make up for any peace and quiet.
We have been WAY too lenient with Right Wing Christo-Fascists. ENOUGH.
Then, they can take those stats and present them to each and every Cons MP trying to get an exclusive interview nationally on CBC.
Now you see why he's such a spiteful bastard.
If we don't succeed at changing current ownership, it will not end well for Canadians as we will constantly be fighting CONS (or worse) agendas.

What’s the solution, in an era of social media?
