Whereas *not* investing in Net Zero will get us royally screwed, because the rate at which we will be able to carry on generating will be limited to the actual renewable capacity we had on the day the oil ran out.

Yes. Well I don’t think it will run out but that it’ll become impossible to continue burning it as impacts worsen and people reject it. But if we haven’t used it to power the transition while we had the chance, we’ll be well and truly up shit creek.

It depends on the extent to which the fossil fuel companies believe their own BS. If they are wildly overestimating what is left, it could all stop suddenly. Otherwise, there could well be increasing international opprobrium for fossil fuel using countries.

Will replacing gas with more renewables help reduce energy bills though? The price of electricity will still be set by gas because of marginal pricing.
