In many species, yes. The males tend to be the more flamboyant or brightly colored ones and the females tend to be more plain.

That's what I think every time I see a pair of bright red cardinals on some sort of card or decoration at Christmas time. I usually point out that they are both male. Female cardinals are not bright red!

That was sort of the impetus for the project, yeah. :> I thought it'd be fun to do a whole series of birds like that, knowing that many people wouldn't realize they were intended to be gay.
