about 14 years for me now, as a self taught artist and this is a trap I always fall into. Built up a lot of bad habits and when I see other artists killing it I often times don't handle it with the most calmness

I'm about to hit the 4 year mark in January (though I did draw a lot as a kid but stopped for about ten years while doing other things) and I remember when I started again I felt as if I would never get anywhere and 4 years felt interminably long and now I'm like oh, young lad, you are still so new!

I think it's good to let ourselves be beginners and also to get to the point where you know enough to know that you know so little! and how fun that is, that you have a lifetime to study and play and explore! no "point" to reach but the next pencil line laid down <3

yes! and I think the more I draw the less pressure I feel—being able to see "gaps" in skill is exciting, because it's like little signposts pointing out the next place to meander to.

I also think time isn't the only factor. Some people are just in better situations, some learn differently and some don't have access to the same tools as others. I've been drawing for decades but don't try to compete with newer generation. I have mental issues and grew up in different times.

I’ve been drawing 30+ years and the same OC for 12. It always amazes me to look at older drawings and see that I’m still improving! Drawing is a process that keeps evolving with time. Like a fine wine 🍷

For real, I drew the best hand I have ever drawn in my life this week. I've been doing art since I was a toddler and never stopped. Yet this week, is the first week, I can actually say I've drawn a good hand 😭😭😭 Shit takes time man.

New artists gotta learn that practice makes *progress*.

I have been drawing about 8 years now, and it is 100% clear to me that you have way more experience/expertise than me. I find it so wild when people who've been drawing for a couple years think they should be an expert already haha I hated my art 2-3 years in.

I've found that the majority of my improvement has come from the last six years or so, once I had already been drawing casually for a decade. My improvements were very slow before I began visibly improving every year.

Purposeful study helps speed it up, but so does building muscle memory!

I've been drawing for 29 years and only just got to the point where I'm confident in my skill since this year, I kid you not. It's like expecting to become a new briliant mind in music composition after dabbling in it for not even a decade
