There have only been two sources listed so far, the etymology dictionary and Shakespeare. None of those had a sources’ source, and given that we’ve been talking about usages of gossip since 1300 the screenshot is incorrect.

Still, a transitive verb isn't a noun, so, you still unfortunately lose this one, since the earliest source is for the transitive verb is 1611. Shakespeare died in 1616, BTW.

No? Shakespeare used gossip as we use it today, which is a verb “they like to gossip” or “they gossiped about stuff.” This is very much the same meaning as we have it today. To be fair Shakespeare used it as both a transitive or intransitive verb, but whatever you probably just googled it.

BUT if you find a source, like they taught you in elementary/grade school, you need to verify the source. With the internet this is very easy. Your source said it was Shakespeare and then cited the OED. So then you look up the OED website, and then type in gossip, the click on the TRANSITIVE VERB.

Gossip is a both a transitive and intransitive verb. In fact most of the usages of the word gossip today are as verbs. even then word classes don’t actually mean anything. A verb can be a noun and vice versa (even proper nouns do that “I totally Batman’d that” is a grammatically correct sentence.”

The transitive verb, then says your source is wrong, and the earliest usage of the transitive verb is actually some other bloke. You check if this is a primary source. Which it isn't, but it gives you the source. You can then verify the source by following that source. And it checks out.

If the earliest usage of the verbal form of Gossip is earlier than I said, I’m only more correct (I didn’t say Shakespeare was the first to use it, I said by the time of Shakespeare). We can assume it happened earlier than any of the earliest sources. But that’s beside the point.

But you will notice the transitive verb is not the noun and then you will have to wonder if the etymology is different. And yes according to the OED, prior to the use of the transitive verb (though if you read Stephen Pinker, you'd already know nouns turn to verbs—not my favorite source...
