has a different meaning from the noun, which isn't hard to figure out, gossip, as used in all instances from 1611-1616 means more like to disseminate information, rather than the later connotations of using uncommonly known information that's used for informal correction.

My clues were to look up Birth History. Which should give you the first large clue for the neighbour category and who was attending births.
Then I gave you two phrases of slang from the Regency period, one to give you a huge hint on the linguistic shift.
