How many vocab words should pre AP honors students be learning in a week or in a month? My instinct says I need to teach waaaay more vocab. wondering what my fellow #edssky #langchat #actfl24 #iteachwl teachers think?

I would say that it’s important not to pile it on, because vocabulary has to be learned, both incidentally and intentionally, always in context. When vocabulary is not done in context, it really does not stick long-term.
In my opinion by that level there isn’t much actual teaching of vocab. You are now putting students into a language rich environment with tons of reading and listening, robust discussion on a variety of topics, and a regular FVR program. They will acquire more than you could actually teach.
Yes (wld love more suggestions for FVR at this level btw!!), yet several of mine are missing foundational vocab so Im imagining reinforcing by teaching/adding on synonyms & like words. I’ve never done it b4 - all suggestions welcome! #langchat
Confession: I did FVR during covid when I taught an all level class of Spanish 1 to 5 🤪! Was perfect 4 differentiation but I wasnt able 2 vet all the readers & realized later some werent good. I dropped FVR bc of that, but I wanna bring it back! I wanna rebuild a good library. Questions for you 1/3
(1) I ❤️ the idea of using actual magazines, manuals, non fiction books, etc vs contrived readers, what r ur thoughts on authenticity (passion topic) vs. comprehensibility (2) I ❤️ screen-free time, but wld want my kids 2 be able 2 look up words on computers (if there's no glossary) & am 2/3
wondering ur thoughts on computer use during FVR? (3) If I have 18 kids per section, what is the min. # of items I wld need, like 25? (4) Can you share your top titles? I teach Spanish 3 (but some are quite weak) and IV Honors. Loved the podcast & thank u for any advice ! 3/3 #langchat #iteachwl
Some readers are better than others, and there is some absolute unedited crap out there also. I always read when kids were reading, and I’d read a new addition, do a book talk for the class, then add to library. Most kids would rather read comprehensible than passion.
@senoracmt.bsky.social What about your Enriquécete? I feel like that would be helpful here. Kids definitely do take the path of least resistance and fall back on known language.
