I remember (somewhat) a novelty song written about the reentry when we didn't yet know where it was coming down.
When NASA launched Skylab in '73
It was two steps for mankind and ten bucks for me
I'd rather pay taxes to put up a net
Then get hit with a piece of our national debt
There was a lack of drama about the whole thing. This wasn't like the Space Race. This was the beginning of the grunt work that would get you further, as well as lots of other phenomenal things. And that doesn't sell papers.
ELO is easily in my top ten bands. I grew up listening to them, so there's a lot of nostalgia, but I still discover new-to-me songs that I wind up loving. It was a joy to include them in a famous starships design alongside Star Wars and others.
More about Skylab! This charming short film shows how the space station's atmospheric re-entry in 1979 was seen though the eyes of a small child in India. π§ͺ π
In the 80s, Mom had a big wooden train engine mold on the porch. It was painted silver and yellow. Whenever anyone asked what it was, she'd say it was a piece of Skylab that landed in the backyard. π

While, arguably, the song is about Laika, the Russian dog, the whole movie it's from is based on Skylab's re-entry.
