Yes, the moon is important. But we shouldn't forget the major technological advancements achieved during the race to the moon. We all heavily rely on insulation, which makes our homes more efficient; batteries, which enable us to drive EVs; and solar panels, which provide clean electricity.
We all have to decide what is more important: protecting the Moon or saving the Earth. After all, developing a Moon - or space-based industry could allow us to relocate certain harmful industries to a place with no life - not even an atmosphere to damage - reducing their impact on our climate.
We don't have to decide that. It's not a real choice. The Moon has a dynamic environment - including water cycles. The answer is to make industries safer on Earth. Mining companies, for example, resist following environment impact mitigation!
Innovation happens without 'space races'! I don't think the accidental terrestrial uses of space products justifies destroying the environment of another world.
