All democracies depend on an educated, informed & involved public.

That's why the GOP drive for school vouchers so they can indoctrinate children into their maga church cults of bigotry and ignorance needs to be stopped by strong federal policies on Education insuring a standardized curriculum

Their big support is in the East, which is a bit like the American former Confederacy: the poorer region that suffered under a tyrannical regime that war (cold or hot) finally ended, leaving generations of undereducated people, a backward culture, and plenty of individuals who bear scars.

In America authoritarianism was tied to tyrannical economic policies of the American South, which now increasingly mirror the U.S. economy of the post-New Deal era, particularly after its capture by MAGA. Soviet culture in East Germany was similarly corrupt, tribal, and war machine-driven.

The AfD isn't just Deutscher MAGA—it's yet another example of anti-democratic forces using the ignorance and trauma of a population destroyed by tyranny to advance tyranny.

Eastern Germans were growing up under the heavy Soviet era of communism, until it officially ended in 1989. Knocking down the Berlin Wall did not un-brainwash them from influence of communism on their psyche. They were swallowed by the Western world almost overnight.
AfD felt familiar, like home.
