People remember the high points of the story but tend to forget the really awful bits, like how the trio of Tarutaru frequently grind the story to a halt and endanger people for completely selfish and unfunny reasons

I suspect one of the low-key themes in the story is that of characters transcending the flaws that lore associates with their species, like rage for galka and cowardice for tarus - so Jabbos spends a century trying to talk peace with goblins and the Chebukkis get on everyone's face, and so on.

Personally I always felt like something must have been lost in translation with Tenzen, because I never understood his motivation for standing against the player

A lot of Tenzen really was him acting high and mighty because of his connection to Phoenix, at least until he fucks that up, but I sort of tuned him out because Prishe was hard carrying the hero side of things

I can't recall off the top of my head if that would've actually worked as intended, but considering my Galka's mothercrystal is in another dimension (or post-Voracious Resurgence implying Galka completely cease to exist)...

I'm glad there's other people who feel like COP has some issues to its writing because oh man I was Not getting it playing through the expansion. Will probably try again someday once I come back to FFXI, story aside it's the perfect vibes video game

Chains of Promathia has some really high highs - the reveal of what the "Chains of Promathia" are was really good - it just so happens to be sandwiched in a lot of stuff that Does Not Work, like the secret impostor you only get to know if you started in San d'Oria
