I really dislike when people make their topic the only topic that is valid to talk about. I talk about fountain pens here cause it's the only posts here that find an audience.
Most of my techy people are on Mastodon. Political stuff I find mostly on Threads.

1. Fountain pens make me happy. Using them, showing them off, talking about them. These things all make me happy. Discussing imminent cybersecurity catastrophes does not make me happy.

2. Fountain pens have a valuable role to play in cybersecurity, so they are relevant and not silly. They are impossible to hack. Or phish. Or infect. As we have learned from James Bond movies, modified fountain pens can be used to carry data storage devices. Or poisons. Or explosives.

3. I can do nothing about imminent cybersecurity catastrophes. It is not something that I can control. Whereas I can control whether or not I buy another fountain pen.

I mean, at least in theory.

Heather Cox Richardson's post this morning about the (lack) of cybersecurity going on was chilling. I'm not a cybersecurity person and even I know this is bad, bad, bad.

And yes, fountain pens make me happy in this chaotic, awful time.

Using these old-fashioned writing implements calms me down after reading about the world's issues. Surviving is a matter of being able to put the world to one side for a few hours to enjoy one's personal space. No manner of criticism of that space will deter me from occupying it.
