to tell their readers/viewers what's being said is a lie, because the other outlets will treat is as truth. it's a very basic answer but a true one nonetheless

Right, but there's nothing to stop them from doing that whether they're physically there or not, e.g., "Breitbart reported Leavitt said XYZ in today's briefing, here's why this is a lie." There's something really demeaning about insisting on being in the briefing room so she can lie into your face.

They are generally not calling what is being said a lie bc they are afraid of being kicked out. So it’s not actually serving this purpose. They are instead just repeating the lies unchallenged in order to protect their access.

This is nice and smug, but the main focus for a lot of them *is* to be stenographers and get accurate quotes out as quickly as possible to the world. This is literally one of the Associated Press' main functions. Most of these outlets employ separate investigative reporters too.
