Subscriptions from the site are what put food on my children, but it's not all paywalled. In fact, big swathes of it are free. For instance, there are many graphs that describe what is happening in the league, like who is good at 5v5 offensively (Carolina) or defensively (Minnesota).

There's plenty of stuff at the team level; early on in the season it can be quite funny. Buffalo has yet to score a power-play goal, Edmonton goalies are yet to make a penalty-kill save*.

* some descriptions exaggerated for my own amusement.

I make charts about individual goaltenders, so that you can see who is being worked like a dog (Jacob Markström, the Devils' best goalie in a while) and who is playing out of their skin (Kevin Lankinen). These are free also.

Most of this stuff is pretty just "what happened" level of complexity, but sometimes by using models that I make (more on that later) you can measure less concrete things, like "what KINDS of games are we playing?"

Dallas and Calgary are both hot early, but Dallas are doing it more comfortably.

There are also charts for individual teams, for individual players on teams, so that you can see not just "how many" but also /where/. It's a spatial game, so many of my charts are maps of one kind or another. These things are all free, for this current season.

In addition to making viz, I also do research about the sport, mostly in the form of making models to better tease out individual contributions or to understand the sport better. Whatever I can figure out, I publish on the site, for free. Aging, score effects, coaching effects, and the suchlike.

Can you do a split of the avs 1st 4 games and the last 3? I'm guessing with the small sample size it would be really funny. Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde type funny.
