Taxes are not automatically deducted. I'm on SSDI (since 2013) and I haven't paid taxes on it this whole time. You can choose to have taxes taken out, but it's not mandatory.

You don't have to have fed taxes withheld from Social Security checks. My tax advisor told me not to, years ago.
