I wonder if confidence is holding many girls back? Or is it that they don’t see themselves in those roles? What can we do to change that? #EduSkyAU @eduskyauteam.bsky.social

I'm intrigued to find often top set maths are boy heavy, and I wonder if this is because girls ask more questions for clarity and this is often mistaken for inability. Boys tend to do the "have a go" from my experience. And do we see a different trend for english? #EduSkyAU
A4. Girls in IT or physics mirror trends in creative fields like design.
LCI Melbourne's inclusive labs foster agency and belonging, empowering women to thrive in traditionally male-dominated creative sectors like motion graphics. #EduSkyAU
A4. Engage them in primary, by secondary it's too late as that is when it's not seen as cool and the influence of the boys becomes more powerful #EduSkyAU
I did feel privileged to be a primary science and DT teacher for many years, as I agree, this is the time to switch students on to science (or STEM). If you don't hook them then, they aren't going to pursue it later... #EduSkyAU
The amount of girls who you nurtured and helped to blossom would be hundreds if not thousands if you look at how you have inspired other educators. You have done so much for the cause, we're lucky to have you in our corner, championing for all #girlsinSTEM #EduSkyAU
I also think one of the great things I saw you talking about at a conference once was the all girls STEM club.
Unrelated, I wonder if there's tracking in K-12 schools of primary school teachers attitudes to STEM and and the uptake of optional STEM subjects in HS?
The great thing about STEM Club is it sat outside of the core school hours and therefore the expectation to cover/learn certain things and we could genuinely explore personal interests 🤩
That does seem to look like it's taking agency/blame away from HS teachers and that's not OK. We need to be responsible as well.

Now I'm arguing with myself.
Absolutely agree - everyone has a role to play but the early years define children’s belief about themselves as learners & if we don’t get it right then, HS Ts will be fighting an uphill battle. In HS there’s so much more pressure to teach content too but in PS that same pressure isn’t there
keep the magic and momentum! primary we have them but it is often too sensory "I see, I feel" then secondary it's third person narrative and all written reports of scientific methods which tbf is often not representative of science in the workplace. Primary Ss are so capable #EduSkyAU
I was @ a school for 11 years, when I arrived (Chem/Physics teacher teaching Bio to start). Bio teachers would openly say that Bio was more suitable to girls in class. Over that decade, they worked to put female teachers in physics and over that time female participation increased dramatically.
There's definitely still some closely held beliefs in families of gendered careers. This is changing but quite slowly.
There's a great edu/awareness campaign in the UK, think of a Nurse, is it a male? Think of a Mechanic, is it a female? Think of a Project Manager, is it a male, etc. #EduSkyAU
Yes, and think we are all guilty of making assumptions sometimes of gender roles. I think we've moved on a lot, but there's still some more miles in the legs to push even further #EduSkyAU
Choose topics that would interest girls in subject selection in Years 9/10. Often the boys will choose it anyway without reading the descriptions. By getting more girls at Y9/10 level you have more chance of some staying on. Friends choosing subjects also influences choice. #EduSkyAU
Completely agree, and I think the relationship to the subject, the content and the teacher is important to girls. It's more of a holistic approach. Multiple factors influence decision making #EduSkyAU
