In the US, post-WWII propaganda has a lot to do with it: The ideal of home ownership in suburban areas, and policies like redlining and subsidies for suburban development and roads.
I was upset that some housing is going up in a formerly vacant lot next to me, as I expected someone to make "Affordable" condos that started at .5mil like before.
