But it’s probably so that City have one less problem (finding a new manager) to worry about as they’re getting through the court cases.
A year extension removes any uncertainty and allows them to concentrate on doing well this year. I suspect if they win the league or CL again he might decide to resign anyway.

I've never understood this argument that he has something to prove like this.
If you can walk into all the best clubs and dominate then why would you care about that? Do you honestly think it's more important than all the awards?
They groomed him for the position after he showed promise and it turned out their faith in him was well placed. If he had been crap then they would have replaced him pretty sharpish.
I'm not sure what point you actually think you're making.
