Update: we played through it real quickly in class and I made it to Oregon. (The rest of my family died along the way, but I made it with 600 bullets, and so I assume that I immediately became an outlaw. Also I was playing as a banker so I assume the family dying didn't bother me that much.)

I had my students play the original The Oregon Trail (1985) for class tomorrow. I gave it a quick play through tonight myself. Despite having read an entire book about how its systems work, things did not work out very well for me.
