I think Nintendo marketed the switch very well. Many switch owners i know also bought the Oled version. The Ps2 , on the other hand, didn't get the same treatment from its buyers and I don't know anyone who traded their 1st edition for a slim as unless your console was broken there was no benefit 🤷

Yeah, it was 2004. It did have the added benefit of having native Hdmi (forgot about that). I think that in total users, the PS2 will probably never be topped. I think the proliferation of mobile gaming put paid to that 😅

Yeah, I didn’t get the PlayStation 2 until 2006 and my main reason was so I could play WWE SmackDown vs Raw 2007. I think the lowered price was a factor too.

Even a fifty dollar drop on all models and a new line of Nintendo Selects would do wonders.

Before the end of Q2, once the announcement for the Nintendo switch 2 happens, we're going to see a pop-up that may push Nintendo over on Sony. Which if they achieve, is going to be very interesting for the industry moving forward.

Don’t own one. But positively glad it spawned the steam deck, and portable Windows PCs like the ROG Ally. Without Nintendo Switch I doubt we would have had another portable gaming revolution. Showing that marching to their own drum is what makes them innovators in the industry.

Oh it’ll pass PS2 by the end of 2026 at the latest. The Switch 2 will slow down Switch sales but I don’t think it’ll be enough to kill all forward momentum. Especially if Ninty gives it a price cut around the time of Switch 2’s launch

SONY produced nearly 161 million PS2s before stopping production and it was still selling even into the PS4 era. I think this number is probably accurate as it continued to sell. Jim Ryan had mentioned the number earlier last year and then it was updated by Nov. I think this is likely the number.

I think it's conceivable if the Switch 1 keeps getting made and/or if Tariffs/global economic concerns make getting a newer handheld console too pricy for people? I wouldn't say likely, just it's not outside the realm of possibility! I'm with you, though, re: PS2 staying on top.

PS2 was fantastic machine! Part of me thinks with the Switch 2 now announced (albeit no release date) surely enough will hold off for the 2 so PS2 will retain its crown. I do love to see Ninty back and doing so well. After a few misfires in the past they could’ve thrown the towel in.

I think this is something that fans tend to think, but I think in reality these companies aren't doing that. I mean, those sales numbers COULD be investigated, the numbers for production and retail sales can't lie. Unless there's a warehouse full of 5 million PS2s fresh in the box, ya know?

I think it'll depend on if Nintendo keeps the Switch as kind of a junior console to the Switch 2. So if it sells them for, like $100 and puts some discount games on it, I could see it still selling. Whether or not that's a smart strategy I have no idea though!
