With all that being said, I think Super Mario Bros 1993 is well worth watching. The fact that this film even exists is insane, and it needs to be seen to be believed. Yes, it's objectively a "bad" movie, but it's fun. And you know what? I think it's charming too. - ThreadSky

nice thread retro. also i liked the movie. it's bad for sure but i loved leguizamo from "the pest" of all things lol. i was a kid sure but i found the movie fun for what it was.

Another fun fact - Nintendo put a clause in the contract: they refused to be consulted on anything about the movie. Supposedly, the directors tried to send some early drafts of the screenplay to them. Nintendo responded by threatening to take away the rights to Mario, sighting breech of contract.

I still think it’s kind of sad that the blueprint for a good live action Mario movie existed and they didn’t use it. There were all sorts of movies using costumes, puppets and animatronic effects that they could’ve looked at at like Ninja Turtles, Labyrinth or any other Jim Henson production.

I unironically loved this movie as a kid. I probably watched the VHS over 50 times. I regret nothing, lol

It's definitely a bad adaptation, but I still have a soft spot for this weirdly entertaining sci-fi romp. Regardless of how you feel about '93 SMB movie, it's anything but boring.

I personally loved it. You’re right it’s not going to be used in film school for anything positive, but it was a long-shot at how could we possibly bring this crazy plumber team that fights turtles into our world. Funny that they basically used the same concept for the new movie and it did so well.

I agree 100% with this statement. Is it a good movie? No. Is it a good Mario Bros. adaption? Hell no. But is it worth experiencing at least once in your life just to see something absolutely amazingly of its time? YES.
