I appreciated that Conclave presented biological intersex as separate from sexuality — the two are often conflated (deliberately) so that “queers coming into your children’s sports” has become the conservative boogeyman.
A useful thing for those old Catholics I know to be reminded of.
Curious to know more though. I felt the queer representation was shallow because of its brevity but otherwise quite human and respectful. In a film about the Catholic Church for a mainstream audience in 2024, I’m not sure how much better it could have done.
It’s a character, not a person? A character being a teaching example is not a bad thing is it when the example is making real life people who could be right radicalised think more compassionately? Representation is media starts with small steps like this.
BUT, the second time around that I saw the film, it was with a bunch of old Catholic people that I know — politically and socially conservative. I expected them to be outraged, but actually, they appreciated the ending. It changed their mind a little.
