Pitch Black isn’t a horror movie. It’s a love-triangle romance made macho enough to get past cooties defences. All subsequent Riddick movies fail because they think he’s the protagonist when he’s actually just the bad boy.

Pitch Black was never just a monster movie—it was a noir-tinged survival tale where Riddick thrived as the enigmatic outlaw, not the protagonist.Like Han Solo before Empire or Snake Plissken before Escape from L.A.,he worked best as a chaotic force within someone else’s story. The sequels forgot that
I would pay hand over foot for one of those lame visual novel/puzzle game "dating" monstrosities, but where you get to romance Riddick.
Shitty Bejeweled-ass minigames but every time you get a large combo Riddick says something edgy like "The dark... is where all repressed feelings come to light."
So true. Not even Dame Judi Dench could save the sequels. Pitch Black was an excellent ensemble cast, great writing, everyone carrying the story along with suspense and action balanced. The sequels are derivative Riddick-hero nonsense.
Riddick was supposed to be a supporting character. Claudia Black was originally supposed to be the captain and play every bit as much of a badass as Riddick, as seen on Farscape. But Sy-Fy wouldn't give her a long enough leave from Farscape, so the movie producers gave her the supporting roll.
Talking about Riddick with him is what got me reacquainted, but I've been aware since I saw Chronicles on TV as a kid. I still can't hate that movie despite how stupid it is, it's just too much fun and has so many crazy visual ideas with its setting.
