Thinking about this some more and wondering if part of it may be that, for a horror franchise, RE doesn't actually treat its cast as being particularly disposable. Characters tend to stick around, meaning there's a lot of soap opera drama built around them, letting you get more attached
Even secondary characters are afforded a certain level of security. It's easy to imagine a version of the series where characters on the level of, say, Barry, or even Ashley get killed off screen for drama or to tie off loose ends or whatever.
Whether it's an actual desire to keep characters around just in case they want them later or just not actually caring about loose threads that much, I think it sends a message that they value their characters and the fandom picks up on that and gets invested
like im sure every video game above a certain level of popularity has people drawing fan art of characters being broody and hot. but afaik nobody is modding assassins creed or w/e to dress the male player character sluttier. why is RE the only game to attract such brave heroes
