We are stronger when we march together 🦋 ✌️
There have been a couple of truly great speakers at this event, but I have to say, I'm VERY disappointed that the 😡 Chief AI Officer of Meta 😡 was invited to speak at this rally!
We shouldn't be sanewashing Meta's massive role in spreading disinformation and censoring activism.
I hear you. On the other hand, anyone who will stand with us, even on one issue, at one moment, is a tool for that task on that day. Some tools we keep handy in our belt. Others go back into a box in the back of the closet/garage until we need em again. 😂
And I thought @pseudogriffin.bsky.social of @srnyc.bsky.social was fantastic as well -- an excellent communicator who was refreshingly clear-eyed about the bigger picture and the work that is required of all of us right now.
Who was the speaker that had everyone raise their hands if they were directly reliant on NIH or NSF funding, and then had everyone else raise their hands, just to show what solidarity actually looks like in real life? I thought he was brilliant, but I missed his intro.
Ooo yes, that's him! @joshdubnau.bsky.social's speech was fantastic!
From their speeches, I could immediately tell that both he and Griffin are scientists with real political organizing experience. 👏🏼 We need people like them now more than ever.
It's definitely unfortunate. His inclusion is an insult to the many scientists and activists who are here in earnest to sound the alarm about fascism's war on science.

Glad the public will start to notice, knowledge is power.

Techno-authoritarianism got us here. It doesn't help to platform ppl who are still actively complicit in (and profiting from) that.
LeCun added nothing that other speakers couldn't have covered. But it was a useful way for him (and Meta) to do some reputation washing.
