They just never EVER thought the things that are about to happen would need to be spelled out.
Lifelong appointments may also lead to stagnant & tired legal analysis, in the face of changing circumstances (ex: global warming) & social standards (ex: human rights).
Court keeps going from conservative to liberal, constantly re-litigating settled law.
Maybe every few terms the country keeps changing laws.

COMBINE SCOTUS & the 13 Circuits and let each Circuit have a seat on a "top" bench. Each picks one of their own for a term and then they return to the Circuit for the rest of their lifetime appointment.
