It’s about consolidating power. 50% of US citizens have passports. And who exactly have passports? Those that can afford travel. Women would have a barrier if they have a spouse’s last name. The black community has dealt with BS rules for a long time to keep them from voting.

I absolutely cannot see how this helps the GOP in my state (NC). I haven’t found a stat, but I would think more GOP women would take their husband’s name. Only 50% of Americans have a passport. 50% of the voters here do not have a Real ID. It doesn’t make sense.

because they believe (albeit likely flawed) that more repulican'ts will comply than Democrats. It may or may not work out in their favor, but one thing to be certain is that many people that could otherwise vote legally, will be rejected for lack of "proper documentation" which at least limits Dems.
